SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers 5th May - Windsor Great Park and Chobham
DESCRIPTION:Meet Twickenham Riverside 10.30. We head up the Crane then some unavoidable suburbia across Shortwood common into Staines. After going through Egham we climb to Englefield Green for lunch at the Sun Inn. We then enjoy the traffic free roads across Windsor Great Park and make our way through Sunningdale and Chobham Common descending to Chertsey to return along the Thames. About 37 hilly but scenic miles. A healthy eighteen of us turned up in Twickenham, including a lady and her grandson , and enjoyed a ride in excellent conditions. A fitter group detached themselves occasionally for extra miles which was a good solution to varying levels of riding. Given the numbers we avoided the awkward gates to Shortwood Common at the expense of a bit of main road. We tried the NCR 4 through Staines but were unimpressed. You can find a route for the ride here - Route

SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers 7th April - Chiltern Ride
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Richmond Station 10.15 Under 60s get return ticket to Watford. We take the 10.29 train to Carpenters Park via Willesden. We cycle through the remnants of the Great North Wood before descending into the Colne Valley and up into the hills using quiet lanes. Lunch at the Seasons cafe at Rowan Garden centre. We cross the Chess valley at Latimer and circle round to Watford via Wippendale Wood and Cassiobury Park. Only 23 miles basic so we could extend the ride if the group is inclined. route Record attendance zero ! (Two riders from Hampstead started but pulled out as one felt unwell ). I did the ride as I wanted to check on the lunch spot and on some modifications of the route. It was a lovely ride and I hope the pictures will tempt some more riders along.

SUMMARY:Rides for Everybody - 16th March - Bushy Park and Hampton Court.
DESCRIPTION:Meet Teddington Station ((west side) 10.15 am. We head into Bushy Park then via Cobblers Walk to Hampton Wick where we join the riverside track to Hampton Court. After coffee in the Tiltyard we walk through the daffodil bespangled wilderness before returning via the west side of the Park. About 7 miles most off-road. Flat. Well I suppose that "Everybody" includes highly experienced cyclists but it isn't supposed to be restricted to them ! Two of us set off into light rain which led to deep puddles in Bushy Park and muddy ones in Barge Walk. Throw in strong winds and this gave us a brisk and bracing ride. SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers - 3rd March - Crystal Palace
DESCRIPTION:Hoping for an urban heat island effect and not the all-day rain of last month. Meet on Richmond Little Green (by Theatre) 10.15. We brave the Upper Richmond Road ( actually not that bad on a Sunday morning) to reach Clapham Common, Brockwell Park and Dulwich Village and up (there is a reason for the transmitter being there) to Crystal Palace Park. After lunch in the park cafe we hunt out the dinosaurs and then head back via Wimbledon Park. About 30 miles with some significant hills. Route Four of us met up at Richmond and headed East. The Upper Richmond Road was bearable but we turned into an ideal cycling facility - a rat-run with a permeable closure in the middle. These became a feature of the marked route to Dulwich. After a challenging climb to the CP transmitter we descended by the Sports Centre to the cafe for lunch. Then we headed how through surprisingly quiet streets with more climbs to Wimbledon and Richmond Hill getting back soon after 2pm. Note to LB Richmond - if you put cycle logos where there is no space for a bicycle lane DON'T put them in the door zone of parked cars. Other boroughs get this right.

We make use of the off road track over Chiswick Bridge and cycle along the riverside before cutting through to Chiswick House Gardens for coffee. We then follow quiet roads to Kew Bridge from where the towpath takes us back to Mortlake. An easy 6 miles for a winter day. We had not too bad weather but only 2 riders. SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers - 13th January - Box Hill
DESCRIPTION:Meet Twickenham Riverside - by Eel Pie bridge 10.30. Our traditional post-turkey jaunt. On/off road quiet route to Box Hill. Lunch in the Bikers Caff at the bottom (as the pub at the top is now a trendy wine-bar). Then a steady climb to the viewpoint and a switchback descent taking us most of the way home. About 35 miles in total. Better bring lights. Six of us turned up on a chilly Twickenham Riverside but one couple dropped out with recurrent puncture. The remaining four had a bit of a struggle with mud in Horton Country Park so by-passed Ashstead Common visiting Epsom Wells ( chemical question : Why is Epsom different from Paris ) The NT cafe at the top of Box Hill provided a variety of food and the view across the sunlit Weald was impressive. Despite the brightness the wind was chilly so we made good speed home getting back by 15.15 Route

SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers - 7th October
DESCRIPTION:Surrey Woodlands route to Bookham Meet Twickenham Riverside by Eel Pie bridge 10.15. We head south crossing Littleworth Common, and Esher Common to Cobham and then a path across open fields and wooded Bookham Common After a pub lunch we return taking in Oxshott Heath and Princes Coverts. Route Eight of us met up on a sunny but fresh Twickenham Riverside. After heavy traffic at Hampton Court we were tolerant of some mud in the quiet off-road paths through scenic woodland to Cobham where we were rewarded by quiet tarmac. After crossing the Mole someone remarked that we seem to have gone back 50 years; the roads were so quiet. Lunch stop at the Old Windsor Castle - a bit of an up-market slide since last year but good quality food and no quibbles about people eating packed lunch in the garden. Back by about 3ish.

SUMMARY:Rides for Everyone - Saturday 15th September
DESCRIPTION:Ham and Bushy Circuit Meet at Teddington Station East side at 10.15 am. We head over Teddington Lock to see the expensive greenway at Riverside Drive before looping around Ham House back to Ham Green. After coffee at the Hawker Centre we cross back over Kingston Bridge and enjoy a ride through Bushy Park and so back to Teddington Station. Five of us met up at Teddington Station . Ideal weather - sunny but not too hot - and we soon exchanged the bustle of Teddington for the quiet roads and quieter tracks of Ham where we picked up a sixth rider. After animated discussions over coffee we enjoyed the riverside ride watching dingies sailing on the sparkling water. Another bout with traffic in Hampton Wick was rewarded with the serenity of Bushy Park. Route

SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers: Windsor 2nd September
DESCRIPTION: Meet Twickenham Riverside 10.00. A westerly ride up the Thames to Englefield Green for lunch at the Sun Inn, then through the Great Park to Windsor and back along the Thames. About 30 miles. That was the plan until it was pointed out that there was a Bike Events charity ride to Windsor using a lot of the same route. With the agreement of the other five riders I reversed the direction. So we cycled up the Crane and then followed the Longford River past the south edge of Heathrow to Stanwell Moor from where a rustic cycle facility took us over the M25 and so via Horton (where Milton lived)and Datchet to Windsor. The proximity of Heathrow gives a slightly grubby air to this route but there are interesting details. After a coffee break spent admiring a replica hurricane we located NCR4 which took us up across country to Windsor Great Park where a ride kite surveyed us hungrily and so over to Englefield Green and lunch at the Sun Inn. We then dropped excitingly down the A30 to Egham and crossed to Staines. We took the riverside path to Chertsey Bridge and then made our way home via Shepperton. A tad under 40 miles. Route

SUMMARY:Rides for Everybody - Sunday 22nd July - Coffee at the Palace
DESCRIPTION:Meet Mortlake Green by station - 10.20 . We ride down the Thames towpath to Putney Bridge and then cross to Bishops Park and Fulham Palace, former home of Bishops of London. After coffee in the gardens we return through Barnes passing the Wildfowl Trust site and possibly paying a quick visit to the exotic tomb of Richard Burton- explorer and translator of the Arabian Nights. A try to see how Rides for Everybody on a Sunday will do - well the same number - just 4 - and 75% identical riders to last time. A brilliantly sunny day. We stopped briefly at Tapestry Court marked both as the site of the seventeenth century Mortlake Tapestry Works and the sixteenth century home of mathematician John Dee. The path along the riverside to Hammersmith Bridge was very muddy and busy but things improved as we went on towards Putney Bridge which was quieter than for a Saturday. The Palace gardens provided a civilised location for a coffee break. Route

SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers - Norbury Park- Saturday 7th July
DESCRIPTION:Following a request this is a trial of a ride on Saturday - as we had a record low of 2 riders I am recording that as a fail ! OTOH the evaluation was positive : "a wonderful day in the saddle - and amazing routes" (Thank you Ruth) . After meeting on a grey Twickenham Riverside we headed south via Horton Country Park and Ashstead Common to Leatherhead. After passing through most of the Mole Gap we headed steeply up to the woodlands and meadows of Norbury Park. We had had a few light showers but also sunny spells and gloriously green countryside. The meadows were studded with orchids and centaury and fringed with rock-roses. After lunch at Brockets Farm we returned along part of the Olympic Race route before diverting over Claygate Common. Bit muddy here. Ride Route - Norbury Park

SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers - Sunday 6th May
DESCRIPTION:Windsor Great Park Five of us met on a overcast Twickenham Riverside. We headed up the Crane then some unavoidable suburbia to cross Shortwood Common into Staines. After going through Egham we decided to avoid an undoubtedly muddy Coopers Hill and tackled Tite Hill with the steep section at the top. Breathing heavily we were soon back into greenery and our lunch stop at the Sun Inn, Englefield Green. We then enjoyed the traffic free roads across Windsor Great Park, especially the descent to Blacknest Gate (a number of our party seemed keen to break the 38mph limit). We then made our way through Sunningdale and Chobham Common descending to Chertsey to return along the Thames. About 37 hilly but scenic miles with only a few drops of rain . SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers - 4th November - Burham Beeches
DESCRIPTION:SORRY - Cancelled due to latest weather forecast. Meet Twickenham Station before 10.00 to catch the 10.05 to Staines. We cycle through Staines Moor then via Colnbrook and passing Pinewood Studios to quiet Fulmer and finally the woodlands of Burnham Beeches in their autumnal splendour. After lunch in a woodland cafe we head down to the Jubilee River path which takes us to Datchet and so back to Staines. About 30 miles mostly on-road. If it is raining the lunch stop would be problematic so I will make a decision on running the ride the previous day depending on weather forecast. Please let me know if you intend coming so that I can keep you updated.. rides@richmondlcc.co.uk I hope that I emailed everyone who said that they were coming. Route

SUMMARY:Feeder to The Big Ride
DESCRIPTION:Join the Big Ride LCC are organising a Mass ride in London on 28th April in support of "Go Dutch". We will be meeting on Richmond Little Green at 10.00 to ride to the assembly point in Hyde Park and home again after the ride. About 30 of us braved a rainy morning to cycle up to London. The actual ride of 10,000 cyclists was impressive - just imagine how many might have turned out on a sunny day. On the return most seem to have opted for a dry train but two father and daughter duos with trailer bike/trailer cast an eye on CycleSuperHighway 8 and enjoyed Battersea Park and Wandsworth Park. Some photos taken by the Richmond contingent (thanks to Tim Lennon, Jamie Crick, Ivan De Marino and Aniello Del Sorbo): Will the rain stay off? - Gathering in Richmond - Line up before the off - At Chiswick Bridge - Arriving in Hyde Park - At the event - Gathering on Park Lane - A sea of cyclists - And from beyond our group of hardy cyclists: A video of the gathering at the start: London Cycling Campaign's analysis of the day (their photos show just how many people were there, estimated at 10,000!) Write up on the event from Mark at ibikelondon Coverage from Danny at Cyclists in the City Front page news in The Times (which includes more photos of the event) The event was picked up by both the BBC and ITV

The Tasmin Trail takes us beside the Beverly Brook (the beavers have long gone) then we turn up to Isabella Plantation. After a brief look at the spring flowers we return to Pen Ponds for coffee and enjoy a freewheel back down to Mortlake. Back about 12.30. Four of us set off after some problems with identification.( LCC have now supplied some more flags so the ride leader will , in future, be more easily seen .) Despite cloudy spells we enjoyed dry weather and usual and unusual sights including a pedal driven rig for filming cyclists.

SUMMARY:Rides for Everyone - February 18th - Bushy Park and the Thames
DESCRIPTION:We meet at Strawberry Hill station at 10.30. and cycle through Bushy Park to Hampton Court. We then follow the Thames downstream to Teddington Lock, pausing for coffee en route, and hence back to Strawberry Hill. Map Seven of us met up - equally divided between Skyriders and LCC members. There was quite a stiff headwind on the way south through Bushy Park and past Hampton Court but we enjoyed some glimpses of sunshine and the wind blew us through Kingston to coffee at the YMCA Hawker Centre. We regained Strawberry Hill in advance of threatened rain.

SUMMARY:Rides for Everyone - 21st January - Chiswick House
DESCRIPTION:We meet a Mortlake station on the Green side at 10.30. A riverside ride takes us to the pioneering landscape gardens of Chiswick House and coffee. We then cross Kew Bridge and return to Mortlake along the South Bank of the Thames. Four of us met at Mortlake and enjoyed a riverside ride to Chiswick. During the coffee break another two riders, who had been uncertain of the start, joined us and the six of us rode against the wind to Kew before being blown back along the towpath to Mortlake. Notable - toucan crossings without visible permission to ride on the footway to be able to use them.

SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers - 8th January 2012 - Box Hill
DESCRIPTION:Our traditional antidote to Christmas Pudding. We meet at 10.15 on Twickenham Embankment (by Eel Pie Bridge) and cycle through Horton Country Park and Ashsted Common to the cycle track through the Mole Gap. Then we go up Box Hill (not actually that steep) to be rewarded by a spectacular view and lunch at a friendly pub. The way back is mostly downhill so not too late back but do bring lights. Wow - thirty one of us met up so thanks to Jonathan as back-marker for avoiding losses en route. The mild but cloudy weather still made the country park and common attractive and the view from Box Hill is always special. A shock however to find our usual accommodating pub converted into an up-market pub-restaurant. After a drink most of us pressed on to Headley Common where the refreshment van came up with a variety of snacks. The reunited group then enjoyed the downhill ride with flashes of sunlight getting back to Twickenham by about 4.30. Thanks to Andy for the route profile: How many helpings of Christmas pudding make 2,076 C ? Not certain how to play this route next year without a suitable sheltered lunch spot on the top. Any suggestions gratefully received.

SUMMARY:London Sky Ride 2011
DESCRIPTION: This year's London Sky Ride takes place on Sunday 4 September. It's a great opportunity for all the family to cycle on traffic free streets in central London. Kelly Brook recently launched the event with London Mayor Boris Johnson, here's a video of the launch. As in previous years, Richmond Cycling Campaign will be leading feeder rides from Little Green next to the big green in Richmond, opposite Richmond Library - Map Link. These rides will link into the main ride in central London. Last year we ran two feeder rides with nearly 200 riders in total, it was quite a sight! This year we shall again have two feeder rides - one at 9.30am and a second at 10.30am. We shall also lead a ride back to Richmond so you won't be left behind in central London! Below we see the 9.30 ride ready to leave Richmond Green A good time was had by all - despite some rain in the middle of the day. As well as the main London event, this year there were two local London Skyrides in Hillington (31 July) and Barking and Dagenham (21 August). Find out more info on the main Sky Ride website.

SUMMARY:Rides for Everyone - 20th August - Apple picking expedition.
DESCRIPTION: Meet Bushy Park Fountain Car Park 10.10 We cross the Thames and take a back route past Sandown Park to Garsons Farm in West End. Time for PYO then return. 12 miles but fairly flat (a short cut on return involves a short steep hill – worth pushing) Just to confirm that this season's apples are ready for picking. But didn't get picked. Just two of us turned up for the ride which we completed at quite a brisk pace. Well "everyone" also includes "experienced" cyclists.

SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers - 7th August - Norbury Park
DESCRIPTION:Eight of us met on Twickenham Riverside at 10.15 and head off south via Horton Country Park and Ashstead Common then through the Mole gap in the North Downs. A steep climb took us to the alpine-like fields of Norbury Park now run as a nature reserve and full of flowers and butterflies. We had a well deserved lunch at Brocket's Farm before returning via Claygate. Pity about the short but heavy shower that caught us in Thames Ditton.

SUMMARY:Rides for Explorers - Sunday 7th November
DESCRIPTION:Bookham Common ( Burnham Beeches intended but no trains to Staines !) Four of us met at Richmond Station and headed south crossing Bushy Park and then Littleworth Common, Ardbrook Common and Esher Common. The path was smoothed by fallen leaves and the views superb. After getting through Cobham we followed a bridlepath across the Mole (Which I misidentified as the Wey - Sorry) to Downside then a seriously quiet road (major hazard children on bikes ) to Bookham Common where another bridlepath led to Little Bookham and lunch. Returned via Oxshott ( where a cement lorry had recently had a go at demolishing the bridge ) Claygate and Kingston. Deterred from taking the twopath into Richmond as it was deeply underwater. 35 miles overall. Route Contact: Paul Luton Telephone: 020 8977 4016 Email: rides@richmondlcc.co.uk

SUMMARY:Sample of Richmond Ride - 20th September
DESCRIPTION: In association with Richmond Smarter Travel and to mark the launch of the Richmond Station Bike-N-Ride scheme we are doing a 13 mile demonstration ride showing off some of the treasures of the Borough. Jonathan and I joined 3 officers of Smarter Travel but alas no civilians. The hire bikes performed reasonably after Jonathan carried out some adjustments. The last section was repeated many times for the benefit of the Council photographer. If the publicity leads to more people enjoying our beautiful borough on bikes it will have been worthwhile. SUMMARY:Ridgeway Ride - 4th July
DESCRIPTION:A select group - just Sue and I - took the train to Goring and headed up the ridgeway under a blue sky. Front suspension makes rough tracks more comfortable and we were soon rewarded by wide views. Two buzards watched our progress hungrily and a yellowhammer posed on a hawthorn bush. There were a variety of surfaces and only the final climb - six inches of sloping chalk ridge between foot-deep ruts - persuaded us to walk. From Uffington Castle a steep road descent took us to the Wantage Road after which a marked cycle route led through time forgotten villages. Time was passing for us so we took a short cut to Didcot and the train home.[gallery]

SUMMARY:Box Hill Ride - 6th June
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Twickenham Riverside by 10.30. We ride through Horton Country Park and Ashstead Common to Leatherhead then through the Mole Gap on an off-road path. The ascent of Box Hill will be accompanied by downland flowers and rewarded by the view. After a pub lunch the ride back is an exhilarating downhill roller-coaster. Four of us did this ride and one orchid was spotted on the way up Box Hill (I ride slowly). Not the best day for a view from the top but it is always pretty spectacular. A short shower during lunch in the garden of the Hand in Hand was fended off by an umbrella and we were back by 3.30, despite your leader taking a wrong turn in Kingston ! (sorry no photos - camera battery flat)

SUMMARY:Ride - Along the Hogs Back
DESCRIPTION:RCC Rides for Explorers : Sunday 9th May Along the hog's back Four of us met up at Richmond and cycled to Surbiton where we gained another rider. The 11.32 train took us to Guildford where after negotiating the traffic system we were faced with a challenging hill (just two managed to ride all the way) leading to a traffic free path through woodlands and a rapid descent into Compton. After lunch at the Watts Gallery we visited the 1900 art-nouveau chapel and the church of around 1100. Another woodland path led us under the A3 to Puttenham then quiet roads to Seale and Waverly Abbey. We returned through the village of Hurtmore which seemed appropriate for its position at the top of yet another hill . Contact: Paul Luton Telephone: 020 8977 4016 Email: rides@richmondlcc.co.uk
