Just wrote to the council asking them what their plans to ensure safer cycling & encourage more cycling along this road. Sent the following to the Highways mgt (is this the right place?):

The Upper Richmond Road West is looking lovely and is a delight to use! However, it looks as if the cycle lanes are narrower than before - they are not 2m wide and I had heard that the council was looking to make them safer / wider / segregated / away from the door zone of parked cars.

While cyclists still feel vulnerable on this fast road, I fear that they will continue to cycle along the pavements, particularly on the approaches to the Clifford Avenue & Manor Road traffic lights where, with two lanes of motor vehicles, there are pedestrian priority and motor vehicle priority systems but no cycle priority system.

As a motorist, I would like cyclists to have a priority sytem so I can predict where they will be, where they will go & where they will arrive from when they join the queue at a red traffic light. At the moment, particularly at the Clifford Avenue junction, there really is no proper space for them.

What are the council's plans to ensure the safety and encouragement of cyclists on this road?

point 9 should be the first and main issue. other boroughs already working on their applications. instead of points 1, 2, 3 and 5 (which will take money, energy and time for the council to complete) why not come up with specific examples where things can be improve. with minimum investment the council can improve cycling conditions very quickly. we, the cyclists in Richmond have the knowledge of where, how important and useful these changes are needed. why not encourage the council to be more of a "doer" rather then prepare more reports which cost money and time and don't help more people to cycle.
